I know there are probably loads of these threads out there, but I just had to say something. The librarian at our school has a brand new 15g tank that she just set up today, not cycled. She has 3 angels, a common pleco, 2 pim pictus, 4 harlequin (sp?) rasboras, 3 fancy goldfish, 2 male guppies, and a green severum. I think I might tell her tomorrow that the setup that she has might not work. It makes me sick just to see all these fish in such a small tank.

yikes. At least the ammonia poisoning is keeping the aggression at bay.

Ouch, I've never looked at an improperly stocked tank that way, but it is probably true.

Have your librarian sign up here, this is as good a resource as she is going to find.

Great idea! Still wondering what to say to her though. I don't want to come across as a know it all. But I will tell her about these forums. And also, would the ammonia keep aggression at bay? How?

I think it was a bit of a joke, the fish are too busy suffering from the ammonia to be bothered with harassing each other....

Ohhhhhhh, ok. Thats one thing that I don't like about online chatting. You can't always tell if someone is being sarcastic. Although I should have gotten that one.

It was mostly a sincere comment, with a bit of sick humor. Seriously, though, ammonia & nitrite poisoning are going to have the fish struggling to stay alive, and they won't have a lot of energy to be nipping at each other.

The answer to your real question, though, is that it depends on you. If it were me, I would say something like this:

"You know, I'm concerned about the fish in your fish tank. The tank isn't cycled, and that means they are probably all going to die in the next few days unless we do something quick. I can help by bringing in some populated filter material. "
"Unfortunately, that's really not the only problem. The fish aren't right for the tank. There is a pretty well established rule of thumb for the number & size of fish in tanks."
"By the way, certain fish really shouldn't be kept together. When the fish are all feeling good and used to their tank, the green terror is going to eat them all."
"You know, keeping fish is a lot more involved than it seems. I've been doing it for a while now, and made some mistakes along the way, but I really didn't get going right until I started reading up on the subject on the Internet."

OTOH, sadly enough, this is nearly always a self correcting problem. At the current rate, there's going to be a tank full of dead fish in a few days, if it hasn't already started.

Thanks confusion, I will say something like that to her, but I can't give her filter media, as I don't have media in the size she needs. Also, 2 angles are dead, the severum, one of the pim pictus, all of the x-ray tetras, 1 of the harlequins, and 1 guppy. She also added a clown pleco, a raphael catfish, and 3 bleeding heart tetras. The three bleeeding hearts were dead and I believe that the pim ate the guppy as it looked rather fat and the guppy was nowhere to be found.

That's pretty much what I meant by it being a self correcting problem, unfortunately. As predictable as the sunrise. Hopefully you can help prevent any more fish sacrifices.

Tell her that if she is a librarian to get herself to the fish store and buy a book!!!!!!!!!!!!! Poor Fishies :rip: :rip: :rip: :rip: :byebye: :byebye:

Yes but most librarians learn through the power of Osmosis.

Pictures on front covers tend to show lots of incompatible fish that look great together I have a book with Paranhas and neons on it and I guess the neons would not live long enough for a photo shot? Perhaps I am wrong!!

The problem is will she care enough to admit how silly she is.

On the otherhand at my sons school the teacher has not yet set up the tank as he says he's waiting for better weather as during the winter holidays the electricity will get switched of and he says the fish will survive better afterwards. He said also the tank will need cycling and he needs to be there to do it. Now that seemed liked a tuned in guy! I was well chuffed.
