in the furture i am planning to completely redo my 10 gallon tank and add sand and live plants, so i plan to buy a giant storage box (plastic) to put the current fish in for a few days, my question is would the heater melt the plastic? i plan to put the old filter in there to along with the water

Can you not do it all in one day? Put fish and water into a bucket, take water out of tank and store it, remove gravel etc, add sand, return the water, add plants and return the fish?

this is a 10 gallon tank.... there's no reason you can't totally redo it in a few hours. if you store around 5 gal of the water, with the fish, and eunsure the filter a kept working then all will be fine.

That's the way I did mine, just stuck the filter and heater in the bucket with the fish and kept as much water as I could. The change over probably only took me 2 hours from start to finish, including time spent messing about deciding which plant to put where :)
