Minnesota - I do NOT have an accent!
I'm working out what fish I can have in the 350 gallon tank I am beginning to build. I only want fish that I really, really like in this aquarium. I want my tank to be full of diverse life - later on, I will probably add corals, but fish comes the cleanup crew with tons of snails, hermit crabs, a few other types of crabs, maybe some starfish to sift the sand, shrimp, and so many more things...

The tank is going to have quite a large sump, and I'll add the protein skimmer, filtration, etc down there. I was even thinking I should add a UV sterilizer. I'm not -overly- concerned with the cost of the whole project, as this is just my college fund here. :D

The tank is going to have lots of live rock, and probably some live sand, too. I will probably use a little base rock, though, to create caves and hideouts. I haven't really dealt with too much liverock, I don't know how dense it is, but I am aiming to get my 1 lb per gallon in.

These are the fish I was thinking of getting:
A royal gramma basslet - or could I get more than one, since my tank will be so large? These are my FAVOURITE fish of all time.
Ocellaris clowns - I was thinking two, three, four mayhaps?
A three-stripe damsel
Clown goby - also another of my favourites, should I/can I have more than one?
A Flame Angel
Neon goby (or more than one?)

And then, I did read Navarre's tragic story, and I do understand that tangs are aggressive towards each other - but would having a bue tang and a yellow tang work in a tank of this size? I've heard from some sources that tangs are only aggressive to those that look similar to them, but yellows and blues really don't look alike at all.

If I can't get both, I'll go with just a blue. Yes, most of my favourites come from Finding Nemo.

Later on, would it also be okay (depending on how the tank goes) to add:
A Coral Beauty Angel
Yellow Longnose Butterfly Fish
Copperband Butterfly Fish
Mandarin Goby (The colors! I wouldn't add this one for a while, at least a year)

And if I'm feeling especially brave/stupid/foolish/loaded with cash, could I add a Moorish Idol after a year or two?

I'm not sure the Coral Beauty and the Flame angel will get along. Granted your tank will be three times the size of mine, but I was thinkin' about getting the coral beauty but people told me their body types are too similar and they would probably be constantly fighting. They said they might get along if they were introduced at the same time, but that's still a big maybe :/

the tangs should be fine but i would add them last and at the same time.
As for the angels.. well i kept a flame and a coral beauty together without trouble. I would again advise alot of liverock and adding them at the same time. with a tank of this size i would imagine they would be alb eo t forge territories of their own.

Why do you wan't a damsel? There a bit of a problem fish, and would chase your future mandarin around

Yah I with that size of a tank I would much rather have a hundred dollar achilles or a three hundred dollar fiddler stingray, then a three dollar damselfish but its up to you even though the stingray might be to big for that tank but still you get the point you can do what you want. Ya i 've seen those angels live thogether in peace just listen to Navarre about putting them in at the same time.

I would advise against the damsel. you might think that a larger tank will help keep the aggression down but not with damsels.. they just see the tank as a larger territory to defend! :p

Many go through lives and are peaceful but the majority are real swines! Lets face it, they were called devil fish for good reasons. If you want something that will shoal then perhaps some Chromis (a damsel yes but one of the more peaceful ones) these fish are vastly underrated and only when in large shoals under the right lights can their intricate colours and beauty really be appreciated.

Or perhaps my favorite shoalers.. anthias? not as easy to keep but there is no escaping they beauty.
Damsels are ok but if you ever need to catch (if it gets aggressive then you will) it will be next to impossible to catch in a 300 tank full of liverock :/

I'm setting up a smaller reef at the moment, maybe I'll put the damsel in there instead. It's a 29 gallon, and I'd probably keep the damsel alone.

I thought about keeping a school of chromis. I'm really not in to the super-expensive fish, or the really big fish. I guess I didn't mention that the tank is a 350gal long.. like, REALLY long.

:D I'll tell you one thing...a pair or two of Black & White Perculas or an all black Percula would be a nice addition.

Keep in mind that Clown gobies, along with most gobies, are pretty docile fish so ANYTHING that might taunt them would be a bad idea...and I would MUCH rather have the clown gobies than have damsels...Dominos can be cute as a bugger until they start to harass your clowns...or ANYTHING in its path. Boooo!

With a tank that size you could get an assortment of Clown gobies...

Here is what I would do...

Two Black & White percula clowns
Two all black perculas
Maybe two Black Onyx perculas (if you're so crazy about spending the $$$)
Green Clown Goby
Yellow Clown Goby
Citron Clown Goby
Rusty Clown Goby
(haha any of the Gobiodon sp)
Yellow Watchman Goby
Pistol Shrimp (for the Watchman)

I'm not sure what else...I'd personally go with fish that were pretty nonaggressive and stayed under 4" for the most part.

The Moorish Idol...hmm. I wouldn't advise it as beautiful and graceful as they are. I would love to have one but I've seen too many people, even 20+ experienced in hobby, lose them. If you want one, I'd simply wait it out with your clean-up crew and let the tank age and rock grow then get two Moorish and hope you didn't waste $80... you can't keep a lot of corals or polyps with them though. I'd rather spend my money and time on an assortment of fish...and corals. It would be a shame to have a tank that size and not have corals :)

Let us know what you end up doing and we fully expect pictures!!!

You sure do like gobies.

I started to wonder if I should put a divider in the middle of the tank. It won't actually be the exact middle, persay, because the way the tank is built is like a 100 gallon aquarium and a 150 gallon aquarium put together at a right angle, kind of like a giant 'L' shape. I could put a divider where the two pieces for the bottom join, and so the tank would be split in to two parts. The divider would have holes drilled in to it, so water and such could flow through, but no fish or inverts would be able to come through.

That way I could have 1 or 2 bigger fish in the 150g area, and lots of clowns and gobies in the 100g area.

That's a pretty cool idea. I've always wanted a custom L-shaped tank with thoughts of doing the same since I'm also a fan of puffers who are a no-no with almost all of my other favorite fish

You should look online for pictures or blueprints for tanks similiar to your idea to get further ideas! Sounds great to me!

I've been looking around, but I think I've got a pretty firm idea on what I want to do. My house has got this weird corner in it, and because of the way the hallway is, you can't put an actual piece of furniture or anything in this corner. It's totally useless, so I thought, "Hey, why not put an aquarium there?" and that's where I got the idea. The guys who are helping me build the tank are professional carpenters, and so they're going to help me build a solid stand, which was the main thing I was worried about - I can just see my thousands of dollars of inverts, corals, and fish smashing to the ground because the stand was too flimsy -

Just in case you dont know what a tank of this shape will look like when its setup, well here you go.... ;)

Its a tiny bit bigger than yours but you get the impression.
