well is there a way i could tell if the drift wood would leak tanin or not by just looking at it before i buy the piece of drift wood ? : )

I really would not have thought so. Definitely rinse and soak to check :)

all driftwood will leak tannin to some extent unless it's sealed with varnish (which i wouldn't want to put in my tank anyway for obvious reasons.)

the stuff labeled as Mopani wood is as good as it gets. after a week of soaking and changing water in a bucket most should be gone.

both my tanks have loads of driftwood.

if i was to remove all the wood from my 40G i couldn't lift it all at once put it that way. the water's crystal clear

i envy you :( the wood i have now would leak tanin soo much that if i hold the parts where i sawed the wood even my hands would become sticky and brown ! :( i have to find an alternative to wood to tie my java moss

slate!

will java moss cling nicely to slate ? shouldnt the surface be porous or something ? :) hehe but im tempted :) id have to cover the slate all around though : )

well i was thinking more in the lines of stacking pieces of slate together (held together w/ silicone) in some kind of pattern (not exactly a cave but similar) so that it gave nices crevices for the moss to grow into/attach to - should attach fine and gives nice hiding spaces for smaller fish as well...i do have a large chunk of moss tied to a rather large single piece of slate in my tank...when i get home from work i will try to remember to give it a few tugs and see if it has attached itself to the flat surface or not
