Will Corys Eat Snails

Re:: in your other thread, but for the record...

Clown loaches eat snails. They need a very large tank, expect them to get to 12"-14". Group 6 min.
A smaller tank version of this fish that will also eat snails is the Yoyo Loach. Group 4 min.

Corys (AFAIK) do not eat snails or their eggs.

Cories don't eat snails 'out of the shell'.

However most fish WILL eat snails once crushed up as suggested (and this includes Cories), but crushing snails up in the tank is NOT a good idea because this may release more eggs thus exasperating the problem.

Also bear in mind that the bits of crushed up snail rot producing A LOT if ammonia.

that maybe the case for you Andy, but it isnt for me. My corys eat shell and all. Everything goes, i have actually sat and watched them do this. And since replying to that post i linked to, i havent noticed any increase in my NH3 or NH4 readings in the slightest.

EDIT

Just to clarify, i have to squash the snail first and they eat the shell as well LOL

Cool!

I wonder then if it is an aquired taste if you get my drift. I have 3 Cory TriLins & have never seen them eat snails. Sorry I did not know they ate them out of the shell and I wonder if it is type specific. What kind of Cories are you talking about???

God I wish there was a simple way of killing ALL of these little sods.

sorry, just edited my post before i saw your reply LOL. I have to squash them first, and they eat the lot. The fry love them as well !

Sheep Dip?!?!?!?!? LOL

Anyway, this kill snails as well as worms that it is designed for? And it does not kill eggs. Will it effect shrimp?

Research time!!!

Andy

PS
If it looks a goer & works, you are offically my new best mate! :good:

If it kills snails, it kills shrimp. If you have shrimp and snails you are stuck with em, unless you can move the shrimp out, kill the snails and then wait until all the snail killer is gone from the tank (using carbon in teh filter and remove THAT before you put the shrimp back).... and id be worried about traces of snail killer still remianing....

I don't know if that's necessarily a rule of thumb? IF the pesticide contains copper [Cu] as an active ingredient, then this is true, otherwise????

Have a read of that link & tell me what you think as to it's method of 'worm' eradication (that as a warning!! also kills snails).. No mention of invertibrate per se.

Andy

What kind of snails are they just out of interest?

Look at Popov's other thread. I think he ID'd them as pest snails: Physa Acuta
