Why Won't My Brine Shrimp Hatch?

how old are teh eggs?

I've been trying recently and have decided to give up... they are tiny when they hatch and i havent got a clue what sort of time frame they take to get tot a good size to feed them to the fish. our eggs too about 3 days to hatch and even then the amount that did was small...

What temperature are you hatching at, what type & how much salt are you using, are you dechloring the water, and where are you getting the eggs from? I hatch between 1/4 to 1 teaspoon daily, never have any trouble. My setup is similar to the one in the link with the 2 liter bottle. 1/8 tsp of baking soda added helps to raise the hardness of the water, which helps with hatching.

Hi there,

My kit/timings:

5 litre flask filled with 3 litres salt water (33g food grade salt per litre of water)

1 tablespoon of artemia eggs (stored in fridge to ensure maximum shelf life)

Heavy aeration (no airstone, just a length of thin pipe on the end of the air hose to ensure good circulation from the bottom of the flask)

This is left for 24 to 30 hours in the fish room opposite a window (room sits about 27 degree C), certainly not left for any longer than 48 hours.

This gives a 90% hatch rate. These are set up every day so there is always bbs for the fish.

key things to hatching artemia:

warmth (will speed up the hatching process)
light (also helps hatching process)
aeration (hatch rates drop if the artemai cysts are not kept in suspension)

Ewww, I forgot to say that I didn't add the baking soda. We have a filteration system under our house so our water is very soft and has no chlorine. The temp is 85 degrees of the water, and I'm using a desk lamp to heat/light. I bought the eggs from a lfs, the brand is Red Jungle Brand. The salt I've used is aquarium salt. Instead of the 2 L drink bottle, I'm using a mason jar. A mason jar is roughly 1/3 of a 2 L, I used 1/4 teaspoon of salt. I am using aeration, and I upped the bubbles per second today. Anything I could have done wrong besides not add the baking soda?

Oh, I wanted to add that in the beginning I was using the 5 bubbles per second, and there were eggs lying on the bottom. Now that the bps is more, there are very little on the bottom. So maybe by upping the bps will help-?

What is the pH of your water? If it's low, not adding baking soda is most likely the problem, as brine shrimp hatch much better in higher pH.

I added some baking soda late on Sunday night, and by yesterday around noon I had brine shrimp! I did another batch making sure to add the baking soda, and this morning I had more brine shrimp. It must have been the baking soda. Thanks for all the help. :)
