 I went to my cousins the other day and saw they have bought themselves a fishtank. The tank is about 10 gallons at the most and thats pushing it. It is way overstocked:
2x 3inch clown loaches
2x 2inch common PLECS
4x Platies
10xNeons
3x Angels
They also said since getting the tank they have been through 4 siamese fighters.
Also my freind down the road from me had just stocked his coldwater tnak of 5 gallons with 3 goldfish. I tried to stop him but he ignored me. I suggested some WCMMs but he just ignored me. His excuse is that they are only small at the moment. I said that they would grow and he just ignoired me. They are about 2 inches long each it is so mean. When i look after them when he goes on holiday i think i will take them to the LFS and tell him they died.
Thanks

That is really too bad I Thinks its not fair to the fish that cant help themselves. I rescued two Oscars from a thirty three gallon "FishBowl" They were jumping out of the tank daily almost it wasn't anyones fault the guy just didnt know why they were doing it so I bought them from him! Now one lives in a ninety gallon Amazon Tank, unfortunatly one died because of previous bad water quality(Internal Parasites) which was very sad, But now the Other Oscar runs the tank!

Good Luck With Your Rescue Mission!

I hear horror stories all the time at the pet store I work in. We take in fish from people who can't or won't take care of their fish on an almost daily basis. We had one guy who showed up with a Red Devil in a bucket that he called an "albino jack demsey". He said it beat up his oscars so it had been living in about 3 inchs of water for a week and hadn't died yet and if we didn't take it he was going to pour it out in the parking lot! Poor little thing is just starting to get its color back, it was almost dead when we got it. Another time we had some guy buy 50 feeder goldfish that he was going to keep as pets in a 20 gallon tank! I tried to talk him out of it but he was a redneck who thought he knew everything and my manager won't let me refuse sales (I can only refuse to guarantee the fish if they are kept in wrong conditions). The worst thing is that later that day the guy came back and bought 25 more goldfish because he said he still had room!!!

Thats what I always recommend buying a fish book to anyone that is setting up a tank. It doesn't always work but if people are willing to buy a book thats makes it a little more likely that their tanks will be well cared for.

A friend of mine came round the other week. On getting into my house and seeing my tank, he said that his daughter had just started keeping fish. After looking at my tank, he said that I didn't have many fish in it. When I asked him what he meant, he told me how his daughters tank was half stocked with fish whilst it cycled and that she had 20 fish in a 24" tank. When I asked him what he meant, he told me that his LFS had told him he could have 40 fish in his 24" tank. There was no mention of the fishes adult sizes either. He would be able to have 40 of any type of fish he wanted. After I told him about the inch per gallon rule (which holds true for him as he only has basic filtration), he was gobsmacked. Happily, he went home with the intention of sorting the tank out and having a go at the LFS. But honestly, how can beginners hope to stand a chance when as far as they are concerned there "trusty" LFS is telling them c**p like that!

i remember when i started fish keeping that the local fish store also told me that i could keep 40 plus fish in an 20 gallon tank when i asked him what fish i could have.
it was lucky u came across ttf as i would of got my self in a lot of mess. :/
