HELP ! My Filter broke down which which caused my PH level to plumit and I the nitrate level to sky rocket. My Local Aquairum told me to carry out a 50% water change, wait two days then do a 30% water change, wait a further two days and then carry out another 30% water change. During which time, I was told not to feed the fish at all?? Sadly, my clown loaches contracted whitespot during this stressful time and I have now lost the whole stock in my main tank.

The Question- If there is no fish in the tank, can the whitespot be killed off without adding a whitespot treatment or completely emptying the tank and starting again from scratch.

I am dubious about the aquariums advice and I am after a second opinion.

Thanks

Neal

If there are no fish to host on all the ich pathoges will die off in around a week.

Thank you so much. I have been to another Aquarium today and they told me to empty the whole tank and start from scratch. I will wait a week before buying some hardy starter fish like Mollies or guppies to see if everything is all right. Thanks once again.

If your filter has just broke down you will need to cycle the new one (which will take longer than a week), unless you are using the same old filter media?

The whitespot will be present in the water and substrate. Give the substrate a good hoover and do a good 50% water change. By the time the week's up then the pathogens should have all died.

however if you did use the old filter media, then all of the bacteria would have also died by the end of the week, unless you've been adding ammonia or something of that sort.

EDIT: On a totally different subject, how can two users have the same username, or am i missing something?
