Hi

I have noticed that my Betta has a white globular spot attached to the very end of his right Pectoral fin. In all other ways he is normal, swimming around and eating as voraciously as ever.

He is in a 5 Gallon tank, with 3 Amano Shrimp.

Water Parameters are
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20
PH 7.4

He appears to have developed this in the last couple of days, noticed yesterday for the first time, I have tried to take some pics on my mobile, but his little fins are always moving ten to the dozen, so difficult to get a good photo.

I have done a Google search, and Ich seems to be a possibility, if so, how does this suddenly develop with a lone fish? I will try to get a better photo, if needed, hopefully someone may have some ideas though.

One other thing is I know that Ich can be effectively treated by increasing the temperature of the tank (currenly at 28c). If I increase the temperature further would this effect the Amano Shrimp. I could transfer them to my 38g, but could they carry the parasites and infect my other fish. (assuming that this is the problem).

Sorry about all the questions, just typing what comes into my head.

Thanks to anyone who may have some insight.

Edit pictures added (sorry quality is poor)

Hi

Firstly I wouldn't move anything from this tank to another one, just in case.

The little white globular spot - is it protruding from the fin? Does it look solid or is it at all fluffy?

A few things spring to mind -

Damage - Possible
White spot - More possible
Parasite - Unlikely, though not impossible

Is it possible to get a picture?

Also, has anything been added to the tank recently, plants, shrimps etc

Hi,

Only thing added to the tank recently are a few floating plants, added about 4 days ago.

I am going to upload the zillions of photo's taken on my phone, hopefully there will be at least one that is useful.

Thanks again. will be in back soon !

LOL I know what phone cameras can be like.

Hi,

none of our photos have worked so far in showing any detail, all blurred or dark. We are trying , as we are very concerned.

At the very tips of the long fine feathery fins, on some of them at the moment, it looks like little air bubbbles, but not what you would say were air bubbles but more like a gelatinous/mucous like bubble attached to the very tip.

The right pectoral fin is increasing in whiteness from the tip and also showing this gelatinous presence.

thanks

Hi
Recently we had a female who had a similar sounding problem. As it turned out, it was columnaris. The tip of her Caudal fin got a kind of white coating which rapidly spread. There are pics of her here (dead fish pics) The white stuff went off coloured after she died.

Obviously its almost impossible for me to say thats what it is, but if it is that the sooner treatment starts the better.

We were advised to use Myxacin and Pimafix, however she died very quickly before we had chance to treat. The only problem is whether your amano shrimps are tollerant to these treatments? If it is columnaris it is highly contagious so moving them to another tank with fish in will be dangerous. If you can find out about the shrimps, maybe post a question in emergencies?

If they are tollerant then thats fine, but if not maybe move them to a holding tank? But please bear in mind that columnaris is transferable by nets, hands, water etc

I may be completely wrong, but better to be safe than sorry. If there's a MOD on, perhaps we could get this thread moved to emergencies as there may be more help available.

I've asked Tolak if he can move it for you.

Moved to the emergency section. Bronzecat would have a better idea of effective medication availability in the UK than I would, as well as what works best with bettas.

thanks Tolak :good: Its the shrimps that i know little about and whether they are tollerant to meds?

Thank you both, I have looked at the links, and am pretty sure that columnaris is not the problem.

I will keep you posted. will also try to get some decent pics later.

Thanks again.

Thanks again.

I have added some photo's, which although not very clear seem to be the best I can get (typically my Digital Camera no longer works) so pics are from mobile!!

Hopefully you can see the position and shape of the main "spot" on his right fin there also appears to be some very tiny ones on the end of Aslan's Veiltail (too small to see on camera)

Thanks to anyone who can shed any light on this

Me again. I was really hoping that SOMEONE would have a clue. getting a bit desperate now, so Bumping up. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to read through the thread. I am stumped, as I am sure are everyone else. Got to keep trying though. Any suggestions welcome. it may lead somewhere

Thanks
C
