I have a whisper 20 on my 10 gallon and its been there about a month. For the past week, water has been flowing over the "wonder-tube" instead of through the filter. I have tried rinsing the filter, the filter medias, even changed the nio-bag. Still over flows. I can turn the water so that it barely flows and then it doesn't overflow as much.

I called Tetra to find out, what I should do and was told, that my filter was "too clean." That I need to let it run and eventually the filter will gunk up enough so that it won't put as much water through and then stop overflowing. Does this sound right?

I had the same problem with the same filter. I had pused the media to far into the filter and it was causing it to clog up really quickly. Try just gently sliding the filter cartridge in and don't push anymore after you feel any resistance.

Thanks, I tried that and it seems to help. At least the water is now going by the filter media. So maybe some of it will be biologically filtered.

had the same problem aslo. i switched to top-fin and problem solved.
I don't want to buy a new filter right now because I am looking at getting a 55 gallon tank and so that is taking most of the extra cash right now. If I had to I could, but I really prefer not to right now.

What is a top-fin? I too have a Whisper power 10gl pump and it doesn't seem to due the job

Top-fin is the brand name of the Petsmart stuff. I don't know if they bought the company or what, I could have sworn top-fin was around forever ????

Is it an internal pump or external? If it's an internal, they have the flow control hidden in an awkward spot. Are you sure you have it on high flow. I have taken out the media that somes with it (carbon) and put some ceramic rings.

My 20gl have has an internal filter and its maxed out and flowing nice! the 10gl Has a Whisper HOB filter and it doesn't seem like it does much at all (also set to max).

That's one of the many reasons I'm getting away from the power filter, HOB stuff. Well, that and my girlfriend's great hearing. She can hear a rat moving 6 miles away. LOL

I'm moving towards the sponge filter. You hook up an air pump to it, and you're good to go. Honestly, they don't require, nearly, as much maintainence as the HOBs. Also, if you can find the right kind of foam...you can make your own. I also make the old box style filters, since they work very well for bettas and guppies. ;)

Whisper seems to do better with the internal filters. I have an internal on my 2.5 gall and liked how it worked so thats why I got the whisper HOB for the 10 gal.
