While The Board Was Down One Of My Platies Passed

It was strange becuase it seem to have all the signs of ich ( staying at the bottom of the tank, not eating) but it was also doing this strange breathing thing, almost looked like it was gasping for air. Now with this place down I was back on the hunt to find constant info ( very hard to do) and nothing was really adding up, all the other fish in the tank seem to be doing great, although the other mickey mouse does spend A LOT of time at the top of the tank. The temp has been reduced to 77 degrees could that have caused the problem........ Basicly what I am wondering is how to tell when a platy is sick ( beaviour, signs on the fish, etc)

I lost 2 platies in 2 days at the end of last week. Both stayed at the bottom of the tank and would not eat, occasionally they looked like they were having a fit and then just did not move.

I took a water sample to my lfs and they confirmed the cause as being a drastic drop in pH. It had gone from 7.2 to 5.0 in 2 days. Apparently due to overfeeding and the filter not coping.
