I've recently set up my tank (80x35x40) and I'm looking for a shoaling fish to go in there.

I want something that I can keep in a group of 5+ that will add colour and character to my tank.

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Hi Issysmum :)

My favorites are glolight tetras. They are easy to keep and have a soft lovely color rather than the brighter neons and cardinals.

Here's a link with more information about them:

Cory cats are also a shoaling fish and since they are bottom feeders will give you a bit more activity at that level of your tank. C. sterbai is one of my favorites and is quite colorful, too.

Can I keep glolight tetras with Angelfish? I was under the impression that you couldn't keep them together, or is that neons and angelfish??

My local shop is great but I can only get there at the weekend and they're always so busy then and I find it very difficult not to slap the irritating children who stand in front of the marine tanks and scream "It's NEMO".

My kids are more interested in the sting rays, especially when it's feeding time :D

Hi Issysmum :)

In their natural habitat angels eat neons tetras, but there are some members who successfully keep them together. IMHO, it depends on the size of the angelfish and the size of the neons when you introduce them. Most fish will eat any other fish if they can, so if you keep that in mind you won't go wrong.

Glowlights and cardinal tetras are a bit larger than neons so their size is to their advantage in this situation.

I had to laugh when I saw your comment about the rowdy kids! I know exactly what you mean!

My vote would go for harlequin rasboras. Mine are really funny, and their distinctive colors and patterns are lovely.

I'm partial to Zebra Danio's even though they may not be that colourful they make up for it with hours of entertainment. Crazy lil fish.

I'd give a second nod to harlequin rasboras. Although, I'm not sure if that would satisfy the urge to "add some color". But, they're neat fish.

Add another tick to Harlequin Rasboras supporters.

A more exotic option, if you can find them, are Sparkling Gourami.

4 or so of them along with a school of 8-10 Rasboras would be drop dead beautiful, IMHO.

harlequins are nice enough but in my opinion one of the best looking and frequent shoaling fish is the rummy nose tetra! these fish look awesome when the shoal and their red face and black and white tails just stand out really well. I have 8 at them moment and they constantly shoal up and down my tank.. I'm gonna add about another 8 at least to get them looking even better.. Check 'em out you won't regret it

Thanks guys- loads of suggestions :)

I'm going to go back to the shop at the weekend and have a look and see which would work best for my tank. I'll let you know what I decide on.

In add my vote to Harlequins, they are great fish which shoal better than other fish I've owned and they are very colourful

Cories are awesome!

Although I only have 3 at the moment....they are quite active and scour the tank floor looking for food. Sometimes they hang on the leaves of my plants or bundle up in their cave squashed together.
