Hi, I have another tank which is about 28-35 uk litres it has a lamp and filter no heater I have the chlorine water liquid for my other tank so I was thinking about getting tropical fish but which is the best beginner, I was thinking about getting a Siamese fighting fish but I'm not certain on that idea so if you can help please do and thanks :)

before you consider stocking, you need a filter and heater and you need to cycle the tank for weeks beforehand, have a read of the link in my signature on cycleing then come back and ask any questions you may have

in a tank that small you are limited to what you can have, betta and shrimp maybe

In case you don't know already, check out the section about fishless cycling, saves a lot of heart break. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/277264-beginners-resource-center/

I personally love female platies... they are quite new to me but I am quite enjoying them. I also am really fond of female guppies (found males to be so much more fragile but females are like vikings).

I am already going to cycle my tank before hand which I was going to do before you said about it but I want to know what fish I could try

In a 28-35L tank a male fighter would be perfect along with some companion cherry shrimp if he wont eat them. A group of maybe 6 male guppies would also work, I would avoid putting any female guppies with males unless you want 100's of babies. Endlers are another lovely fish and you could have a slightly larger group of males, but again no females as they are closely related to guppies and breed just as easily and freely.
To think outside the box you could even make the tank a pure shrimp tank, with a shrimp colour that you like. Cherry shrimp are by the easiest shrimp and now come in a range of colours and patterns. The yellow ones are particularly standout and the rili pattern look a bit like the much fussier Crystal reds.

I was thinking about shrimps because of their colour if you can give me any info on them then that would be much appreciated, but until then I will try and find some out

Cherry shrimp are by far the easiest of all shrimp to keep, being very forgiving in water temp (although they do like warm water and breed well in it) and they are not as exacting with regards to pH, although too acidic will cause problems with their shell.

Mosses and other fine leafed plants are your shrimp best friend, they will also happily hangout in the trailing roots of plants like Java fern.

Food wise they will eat almost anything, but you can also get shrimp specific foods which are supposed to improve their colour and aid in shell shedding and development.

I keep cherry shrimp with corydoras catfish, bristlenose catfish, Borneo loaches, dwarf chain loaches, khuli loaches, Pakastani loaches (yo-yo) guppies, endlers and even Siamese fighters. I ended up even putting extra cherry shrimp into my goldfish pond and so far the goldfish have not managed to eat them all. Normally though any fish that can fit a shrimp in its mouth will eat a dwarf shrimp.

With the shrimp you could also look at keeping a couple of nice snails. I have some nerite snails (which dont successfully raise young in normal fresh water tanks so are not possible pest snails), as well as some other interesting native snails. Depending on what country your in will depend on what species of both shrimp and snails will be available to you.

Thanks for the info, I live I the UK so I'm not certain and I have only recently thought of becoming a tropical fish keeper so every time I've gone to the pet store I haven't thought of looking but I should be going after Christmas so I will have a look there is also a fish store nearby which I will check out because they have apparently all types of fish which might be a better idea so thanks again :)
