We have just brought a 54litre tank and would like some advice of how many fish we can keep and also an idea of the best type of fish for a newbie to this.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi and welcome to the forum! Your best bet would be to hit the beginners section and read up on fishless cycling. Try to take whatever your local fish shop says with a pinch of salt, remember they are out to make money! You are a good few weeks/months away from adding fish yet but it depends on what interests you, livebearers like guppies? schooling fish like tetras?

Sorry, just realised this was in coldwater area! Have you considered tropical? Your tank isnt really big enough for coldwater and tropical would be no harder to setup/run. You would just need to buy a heater.

As dh058977 says, there is lots of great information in our beginner's resource centre (the link is in my sig); the most important ones are the ones on 'cycling', that's how to grow a colony of the good bacteria in your filter to keep the fish healthy.

I'd strongly advise you to get a heater and look at tropical fish (they're no harder to look after than coldwater) as 54l is really too small for the coldwater and temperate fish.
