I am thinking of adding dirt or sand to my tank. But just wondering what weighs more ?
Wet gravel or wet sand or wet dirt/ mud ?
Trying to make my tank weight has low has it can be.

Sand is generally more dense than gravel, why do you want the tank to lightweight?

compared to the weight of the tank and the water, the substrate weighs next to nothing....why worry about an extra 5 or 10 pounds?....if 5 or 10 pounds is the difference between your tank falling or not, you have bigger problems then the substrate

Well i live in a house which is very old and has been converted into 2 flats so the down stars / ground floor is 1 flat and the up stairs is a second flat i live on the up stairs. I have a tank which is over 3 beams and was fine i have gravel in the tank and all was fine. I tried to plant plants but noticed there was not enough gravel in the tank to hold the plants down / root them so i added more gravel and then the tank moved... I thought to my self the gravel must be heavy to move a full tank fill with water..
and im trying to make it way had less has possible to make it safer in my mind that it won't go though the floor..
I have shown my floor beams on chat and was told they look chunky and good...
I have had a biger tank int he same place be for ( nearly double the size ) and was fine..

if adding gravel was enough to move the tank, i would be getting that tank out of there as soon as possible

I meant the tank moved nearly off the stand...
My floor beams can be found here

They look chunky enough to hold the tank... I think my tank is 4ft x 2 ft high x 1ft going back

i would get a better stand, mine is on a coffee table its a lot stronger than a stand made for fish tanks, i think so anyway, my old tank used to wobble on the stand

floor joists are more than adequate to hold your tank. If you want light weight use cat litter.

you have been shopping at the wrong stores,

fish tank stands are built and designed to hold the weight of a fish tank

thats what they are made for

Not if she has a coffee table like my families dining table, solid as a rock with ridiculously thick and sturdy wood. She never said the stand wasn't strong enough, just that the table is stronger.

So you think my beams are safe ?? I notice i have beams coming from the one wall and joining onto the beams from the other wall so if the beams did go it would have to drag the two walls down with it :). I was planning on having a marine tank but thought with the live rock and everything the tank would be way to heavy so went with tropical....

Surely a lb of wet sand weighs the same as a lb of dry sand, the same as a lb of feathers weighs the same as a lb of lead!!

(Just winding y'all up)
