Got a Amazon Sword plant from the lfs last night and it looks great next to a big rock. But I hastily put in in the tank and saw that what I thought was soil around the roots was really some gray cotton-textured stuff. I got most of this "soil" out of the tank after I noticed it.

Anybody know what it is and if it will effect the tank?

Thanks (I'm a noob at aquatic plants!)

It was probably nylon mesh. They use it for potted plants. If it's attached to the roots near the stem, don't remove it because it will really hurt the plant. You can remove the nylon when it's at the end of the roots, though.

It's rock wool. Take as much of it off as you can be VERY, VERY gentle when doing so other wise you can harm the roots. If you do it'll just take the plant more time to adjust to the tank and to start growing. However you can kill plants by being too rough taking the rock wool off. If you can't get it all off don't worry about it just get what you can off and you should be fine.
