Hi, opinions wanted please.

I am considering breeding fish. Partly for the fun, partly to try and make some money. So, out of the following available fish which would be most sought after? I can probably start with 2 pairs, one in each 3ft tank so 2 different types of fish can be accomodated.

DICROSSUS FILAMENTOSA (wild)
NANACARA ANOMOLA
NANOCHROMIS TRANSVESTITUS
LAETACARA CURVICEPS
LAETACARA DORSIGER RED
NANOCHROMIS NUDICEPS
PELVICACHROMIS TAENIATUS LOKUNDJIE

I can get hold of pairs for about £20.

So what would be the ideal fish to start with that is both enjoyable to keep AND that will sell to make me a little profit?

Any other advice also welcome. Thanks!

while you are quite right to use proper names to eliminate confusion, i don't know what any of these fish are, and am too tired to google them!! can you tell me the common names? I'm sure everyone else knows them and is thinking i'm a complete idiot for not knowing, but.......
Also, you will get a more accurate response if you post the general area you live, as demand and price varies from region to region.

Sorry, I've not heard any common names for them. They are dwarf cichlids that grow no larger than about 3.5-4 inches.

Ammended profile info with my location. Thanks

What sort of grow outs do you have? As if you only have the two 3 foot tanks, you'd be best getting one pair in one tank and using the other for grow out.

you actually remember their scientific names over the common names? angels are not in the list but they are worth a try

Got an 18" (45l) tank for grow outs. Also plan on getting a 4ft tank with a divider to make 2x2ft.

That said I would probably get 1 pair now and another in the new year anyway just to stagger things.

Never heard any common names so have to remember the Latin!

Angels are pretty common around here. Locally bred are everywhere so unless I could get a really spectacular pair then it is not really worth it.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

if you could get a wild pair. wild as in a true orginal strain. and u're able to breed them, you'd get money coming in. no doubt about that

Surprisingly, this is often not the case. A flashy pair of tank bred fish far removed from the wild will often sell better than a more rare wild or F1 that looks a bit plain. The general public is the biggest buyer of fish, your bread & butter fish are your more colorful livebearers, angels, African cichlids, and a few varieties of corys.

I would go witht he PELVICACHROMIS TAENIATUS LOKUNDJIE. They are stellar fish, but they are super un-common around the good old mid-west. I have googled them many times and there isnt much to say, so your on your own as to water conditions. I wish you luck!
