hi guys im looking to buy 2 salvini cichlid and a baby oscar. Currently I have a 4ft 200LTR tank of 48x12x21. I will be upgrading to either a juwel rio 300 or a juwel rio 400 within 1 or 2 months, im wondering if the oscar is a juvenile would it be ok to keep it in my current tank temporarily until I get the bigger one?

Thanks Ben

Minimum tank size for a single Oscar would be 55 gallons. So your Oscar would be ok for its entire life, tho a 75 would be better. To keep all three something around 125 plus would be needed. If you intend to keep them together, keep an eye on the salvini's, some are mild mannered others are just pure evil. Good luck!

It will likely be very temporary if you decide to do it this way. :)

Some say a 55 gallon is a minimum for an Oscar but 75 is more realistic. Oscars can get big. Mattlee had a 13 inch (or there abouts) Oscar in a 5x2x2. I really wouldn't recommended having that as well as 2 salvini's in a Rio 300 or even a 400.

I have a Rio 400 which is home to an Ornate Birchir and soon my flowerhorn will go in (when it's big enough not to get eaten by the ornate) and that will be it for that tank.

You might look at a 300 or 400 and think its huge but it's not until you see something like an Oscar or similar sized fish at adult size that you realise just how much room they need. I'd say get a 6x2x2 for your planned stock (to live for life) with 2 good canister filters like tetratec ex1200's, fluval 406's or fx5's and a decent powerhead as oscars are very messy.

Good luck :)
