I only want one or maybe up to three in the tank. Nothing in it now. I have a lot of freeze dried insects to give it and might get some snails. Oh and what is a good big snail to put in there with it? I'd like a bigger one if it would be happy alone in a ten gal tank, otherwise you let me know, what kind to get ok?

2 maybe 3 Dwarf Puffers, which are fresh water.
All the other puffers need a bigger tank than 10 gallons.
When you say a big snail do you mean to keep in the tank with the puffers?
If so I wouldn't the snail will soon be eaten.

I agree with what smudger says :D

A freshwater 10 gallon would be ok for a couple of Dwarf Puffs and maybe a few otocinclus, but any snails in the tank would be eaten. Puffs love snails regardless of what size they are

have a look at the top of the oddball forum for a pinned topic on puffers.

So you think the regular (figure 8?) puffers like I see at Walmart are too big for a 10 gallon tank? Tomorrow this guy's getting in a shipment of dwarfs so I can go look at them, that probably is the best way to go, then they have more room to swim around. I have a little cave they can go rest and hide in.

Recommended size for F8's is 15 gallons for the first and an extra 10 for each after.

Read the sticky on dwarf puffers, they are agressive little buggers, plenty of plants to break up the line of sight is required.

Have you cycled the tank yet? If not forget about any fish until you do so.

Well the so called dwarf puffers that shop was supposed to get in turned out to be figure 8s. Oh well; I got one. Paid more than walmart but it's a nice one. Cycled the tank? I filled the tank a few days ago; my neighbor put some of that dechlorinator stuff in yesterday and I just put in 2 tablespoons of salt & am running a submersible filter in there. Right now I opened part of the bag and the puffer is in the bag swimming around. I figure either before bed or in the morning I'll remove the bag. Does that sound cycled? I'll look around and try to read up on it right now. Thanks.

Nope your tank isnt cycled so yet another person who may kill their fish through zero research. Also Fig8 Puffers are brackish not freshwater fish so you will need a hydrometer and marine salt. You cant just throw 2 tables spoons of any old salt in there.

Ok, I took that puffer back (the shop's just down the street.) I put 2 tablespoons of aquarium salt, like the box said to so...I have a pleco and catfish in there that are doing ok so I must be ok now. Tues I'm ordering an ABF and not going to get a puffer as they won't get along with the other fish I don't think.

Thanks for returning the puffer. And I don't know what you guys are thinking of suggesting 3 DPs for a 10G. I've had one almost kill another in a 10G, and that's just with two!

groove,
It's like with all puffers it depends on the temperment of the individual puffer.
3-5 gallons is the recommended size for one DP.
But please note I said maybe 3 not "hey bung 3 in it will be alright"

Keep in mind that just because you may have had problems doesn't make the advice wrong.

Yeah, I've heard that they do better in groups of three or more; two will fight.

u cant put NE puffer in thier but the dwarf puffer. . it would be way to small for a messy agressive puffer. . but im sooo a fan i have a gsp in my 75 gal tank hes done really well in thier even with my balloon mollies an dreg mollies!! a couple dwarf FRESHWATER though puffers would be cool. i had one and gave it to a friend who still has it. . it happens not to be agressive tword ne thing yet! ive had him or got him a long time ago
