for me the toughest to maintain is fine sand, really it's almost un vacuum-able, with a special caviot to white sand, as all the non sand shows up greatly, I actually like my black sand tank...

for use with an under gravel filter, I prefer small river gravel with worn edges, I like the natural brown color... I've purchased this 4 times, it's always been washed clean enough, that I could just add it to the tanks...

what say you???

I've done sand as well for many years. The problem I had was that plants didn't root that well. Only adding snails were a slight solution overhere. I prefer the hollow substrate where a better bacterial culture can grow, Waste will be broken in a better way.
