I was just wondering because I'm looking into buying a new fish tank from Petco and a lot of there tanks that they are selling are advertised as show tanks and don't include anything but the tank itself.

I think they're referring to tanks that they use to show off, or maybe thier best tanks that they use to attract customers.

If that is true then why do they advertise them as show tanks on there website. I was also looking at local online sites where people sell things and there are lots of people that sell show tanks.

Like say this tank for example: show tank

All this tank includes is a light fixture

Maybe becaus ehtey come in different colors or something? I'm not really sure. :/

Probably because its acrylic and acrylic is more expensive and better than glass, you get a cleared view, its more resistant to scratches and its seemless also if it does get scratches they can be polished off.

oh and it weighs less too!

Show tank may mean floor model. Which means it's a tank that is already open and available for customers to touch, feel, look at, lick, whatever.

Or it could mean that there is no black trim on the edges, like that link you provided.

In the sense that anyone selling a tank uses it, the phrase "show tank" usually means a reason to jack up the price a bit. :lol: Your show tanks usually have an imitation oak trim, or something other than black plastic. Often they are bow front or other than standard sizes or shapes. They often come with a nicer stand & top.

In the real world of fishkeeping, a show tank is usually one in a nicer, finished area of your home, and is decorated & kept accordingly. Here's a pic of the 65 gallon show tank in my living room;

In contrast here's an old pic of my breeding setup, it's in a room in the basement;

If I set up the breeding tanks like that in my living room, it would look totally out of place, not to mention my wife would kill me. If I set up my show tank in my fishroom it would be just as out of place, and my fishkeeping buddies would laugh at me.

I think it's more a decorating & placement issue than the glass box itself.

I think I can answer this question because I've done the research and I've actually purchased a "Show Tank" after doing said research.

SeaClear makes 3 different shaped tanks. They are categorized as Regular, Show, and Tall. Differences are the L, H, and D. Show size is in between the tall tanks and regular wide tanks.

SeaClear Acrylic Aquariums are offered in most popular sizes. The group of Standard Aquariums include the three industry standard rectangular model designations: Regular, Show, and Tall.

I thought the ADA makes the standards? Anyway SeaClear is a Casco subsidary and they are the biggest acrylic tank makers out there. Yes it would be nice to have a single standard way of designating different tank shapes. :)

BTW those Show tanks sold at Petco are SeaClear units.
