GH stands for general hardness, TH not sure. Basically it is the amount of dissolved salts in your water (e.g. calcium and magnesium). It can only be reduced by chemical means or by dilluting with reverse osmosis water / unpolluted rainwater. The hardness of your water depends upon what part of the country youre in due to the type of rocks / soil your water soaks through to reach resevoirs. Most egg laying species prefer soft water (less dissolved salts) and most livebearers prefer a harder water (more dissolved salts).

However, the majority of fish will cope with a GH that is not the same as their natural surroundings, mainly because they have never lived in natural surroundings. Unless you are keeping very sensitive fish I wouldnt worry about your GH readings to be honest. Adding any chemicals to fiddle with water chemistry is generally always a bad thing.
