Ornate bichir
Black ghost knife fish
3 giant malabar danio
2 australian rainbow

not all at once of course and definatly after a fishless cycle with a sand substrate

edit: oh yeah tank size might help 55 gal

If you haven't already used the substrate as sand, then I would reccomend a different subtrate. Knife fish come from the amazon and prefer a slightly acidic ph. However most new sands will leach minerals that cause the ph to skyrocket. Thats why sands tend to be used as saltwater tank substrate. Saltwater fish like a ph of around 8 and the sand helps stabalize that ph.

However the ornate bichir prefers a more alkaline ph as it is an african fish. The other fish prefer a happy medium of around 7.

ill prolly use silica based sand as opposed to calcite based b/c it shouldnt mess with the pH

so what ur saying is i cant have knife fish and bichir wont work together right?
what about either knife fish or bichir and the rainbowfish and giant danio?

As long as your using inert sand you shouldn't have a problem. Most fish, excluding very particular ones will adapt to a wide range of tank conditions though they may not breed as readily.

Yes you could easily deal with one of the first two and then have the others. As KJ said, many will adapt, but in addition to not breeding, they likely will not thrive and not be extremely happy, nor show off their full colors and demeanor that makes them so attractive in the first place.
