O.K. so, I guess this discussion would go here since I need to know if there is specific equipment that help my situation. Let me explain first.
I have a tall hexagon aquarium. It is a 20gallon hexagon although I would swear it is bigger. Only because it seems so much bigger than my 20-gallon high aquarium. Anyway, I've had it running now for a little over a year. One angel in it and three gourami's along with three cory's. When I first got it I was worried about oxygen getting down to the bottom for my cory's. I never had a taller tank like this and wasn't sure what my Cory's would do so I was trying to prepare. So, I got one of those filters you can put down at the bottom that also gives air flow. A good blast of air would come out a few inches from the bottom and this helped circulate everything to get up to the other filter that only came down halfway from the top. Plus, it could suck up some junk too and give extra oxygen. Other than having to clean it nearly weekly due to gunk and algae everything was good.
A couple of weeks ago I noticed one of my Gourami's swimming strange and had a sore on his side. I figured out after a while that he has that gourami disease along with a Chinese algae eater taking advantage of the situation and was sucking on his slime coat. So, the sores he got I wasn't sure if it was from the algae eater or the disease if not both. I took out the algae eater and gave the Gourami meds for any secondary condition that might arise while he healed his slime coat. He is all healed up now and doing rather well. But because he has Gourami disease he will, if under any kind of stress, swim straight down in a spiral. So, I try to keep his stress down.
Where I am going with this is I had to turn off that filter down on the bottom because that Gourami gets stuck to it. But now I have snail poop, fish poop, parts of leaves from my angel tearing apart my plants and so forth all over the bottom. Not to mention the algae is coming back here and there because the lack of a algae fish and for whatever reason my two nerite snails do nothing to clean up the glass or algae anywhere in the tank. They stay on the wood and eat only that as well as the new parts of the plants that are trying to regrow from what my angel fish does to them. I have never had such useless Nerite's before, and I've had many in my 15 years of having three aquariums with them in each one. So, what can I do? Is there anything out there that will help my situation but not hurt my gourami. Something that won't suck him up but can give some circulation. But not too much circulation because of him as well. I don't want to euthanize him because he can still do everything. He eats, swims normal most of the time, and even can stand up to the other gourami trying to take over his role as lead Gourami. If he can still do those things, then I owe it to him to help him and let him live. I can't put him in any other tank because he wouldn't be compatible. I tried to find an extension tube to fit on my filter but can't find one. It is a Silent Stream filter and came with the tank. Any thoughts?
