Hey everyone. I have 2 fish that was sold to me as Siamese Algae Eaters, but I am pretty sure they are not in fact true SAE's. I am also pretty sure they aren't false SAE's as the stripe down their body does extend through their tail. They also school very well with each other and the true SAE I do own which I believe rules them out as false SAE's as they are intolerant of their own kind. I am positive they aren't flying foxes as the colouring is all wrong. I have owned these fish for about a year and they are approximately 4-5" in length.

Can anyone positively identify these fish??

There is a visible gold stripe extending down the body right above the black line that doesn't show up in the photo very well. Other than that the picture accurately reflects the colour of the fish.

Thanks in advance

I have read that article in the past. When I originally read it I thought I had flying foxes too. So I started to research them more and I came across some pictures of them. My fish don't look like the pictures. They don't have white tips on their fins, and their colouring isn't as dark as a flying fox.

Thanks for the link, I have bookmarked it now :)

I wish! I love the Denisoni Barb. I only paid $4.99 for these fish. Denisoni's sell for like $40+ each here.

One of these days I will own at least 6 Denisoni's, I just have to win the lottery first

It appears only a little ligther in colour than my true Siamese Algae eaters. I have seen flying foxes (being sold as Siamese Algae Eaters - ironically from the same store I bought mine from) in the flash, and the ones I saw don't have white tips to their fins.

E.g. this is a flying fox from google images - no white tips

looks like an Apareiodon Affinis to me

Looks like a very fat SAE to me. I had a very simialr fish. Infact, exactly the same. They look just like an SAE, and I never found another ID, although yes, their colouration is slightly different.
