Hey all,

I found some white/yellow bugs in my cherry shrimp tank. They are all over the plastic wall and the largest ones are on a carrot that I put in for the shrimp. They seem harmless and the shrimp just toss them aside when they accidentally pick one up off the carrot. I think they may be seed shrimp but pictures on the internet don't look similar enough for me to be sure. Any help IDing them or getting rid of them would be awesome. I'm sure they are harmless but their numbers are getting a little high for my liking. I don't think decreasing food if much of an option since I am trying to increase the shrimp population right now. A natural predator would be great if I could find one that will live peacefully with cherry shrimp and stays small enough for my tank.

Tank Stats:
2 gallon heated and filtered aquarium
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
pH: 7.7

Look like they could be a type of ostracods have a look in the Forum section under Tropical Discussion - Common Hitch Hikers in tanks and ponds. If this still doesn't help maybe lookup What Bug is That? online.

Ok, cool. After reading some about ostracods/seed shrimp, I agree with both of you two as well. Pretty annoying though. I guess I'll repost this like Baccus mentioned, but I would really like to get rid of these things! I have 4 tanks and they are only in 1 right now. I've read that nitrate overdose or trichloracide treatment may do the trick. I also read that neem tree insecticides may work with ostracods. I'm fine if the cherry shrimp die and I'm actually considering all three at the same time. I'd use bleach for a few days if I didn't have live plants in there I would like to save for the next inhabitants. Thanks for your help and I'll repost in the other forum, any other advice is welcome!

FYI for those interested about where I found the neem oil idea: http://www.neospark.com/images/Review.pdf (page 5 under plant extracts)
