Hello everyone I have a question. My grandma has a tank and has been buying water at the store to put in the tank when she does water changes. She has well water and has a water softener and has heard that you shouldn't use this water for a fish tank. She asked me if it would be ok to use that water and I don't want to give her bad advise, so I thought I would ask you guys. I have tested her water that comes from the softener and everything is perfect. So what do you guys think could she use this water or should see just keep buying water. She only has a seven gallon tank so its not a big deal but it could help her out cause she has a tight budget. Thanks in advance for your replies!

If the water softner is for drinking/house water then I believe that you should not use it for fish as the 'treatment' process is wrong for fish (something about sodium ions i think. hopefully somebody clever can clarify).

A lot of people use well water, but it's better to filter it through a carbon filter, at the very least, first. Most places that sell RO units also sell carbon filter units as well, and i think they retail for £25. The filter inside lasts about 6 months (YMMV) and then need replacing.

HTH :)
