MBU Puffer was ok then it went off its food and seems to be gasping very heavily, sitting on the bottom of tank. It has been like this for about 3 days. Water quality is fine. Any ideas?

Can youn post your stats to take a look at in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Is the fish gasping at the top of the tank or bottom, is the fish bloated, or pale or darkened in colour.
Any signs of laboured breathing or flicking and rubbing.
Any spots or dusting on the fish.

Hi,

What type of testing kit are you using?IMO, In a cycled tank there would normally be some nitrates.

How long has your tank been set up?

If tank has been set up a while and stats are good like you say.
It sounds like a bacterial infection, as they sit on the bottom of the tank and labour breath.
To be honest he dosn't sound to good, i would prepare yourself for losing him, sorry.

I'm using Sera Test Kits which are very effective results, the Nitrate level is'nt a toxic level

You've avoided giving the correct reading for the Nitrate level twice. No one will judge you for giving a reading, people just want to help your sick fish.

Mbu puffers get very large as well. Tank size may be an issue with regards to stress.

Fella,

Thanks, as a newbee I was questioning my responce. Was going to re-read everything about the nitrogen cycle. Thought I had completely misunderstood everything. So thanks for your reply. I was getting nervous.

Cheers :good:

additionally, puffers are unusually sensitive to the presence of nitrates.

if you haven't started doing a daily water change, i suggest that you do so immediately.
