Well I have now moved and my worst nightmare has come true. I bought 4 small to medium-sized goldfish for the 55 gallon before I moved and the well water I had there was so low (5.0) I kept a nylon stocking of crushed coral in the Eheim filter. This raised the ph to a very stable 7.8 which is fine for goldfish, especially compared to 5.0.
Now, I kept beside it, a 10 gallon tank constantly filled with water of the same ph for my water changes so they wouldn't have to go through any change in ph during such. I used the same method, crushed coral in the filter. This worked excellent but I had to deal with buckets/cups instead of my python hose which I have been using for years.
Now that I've moved my location, I thought the ph situation would change, but alas I still have well water and its STILL a very low of 5.0. This time instead of having the 10 gallon sitting around with water in it all the time and dipping/filling water (which I can't stand), I'm thinking of just doing changes directly with the python. This would mean 20% water changes once a week (at least).
Is this going to stress the fish too much ya think?
I'm also considering the option of finding out how much baking soda I would need to raise the ph and mixing it with tap water in a 5 gallon bucket to pour back into the tank. It would be simple as all I'd have to do is use the python to gravel vacuum, suck out the water, and then put in my pre-measured amount of baking soda in the bucket and then fill with water using the python.
What do ya think my options are?
I know this is in tropical fish and its dealing with goldfish but its a ph question that would be common for any fish.
