I have white spot in my tank. Fish were put into a fully cycled tank just over a week ago. (fishless cycle completed) I have platies, dwarf gourami and leopard corys.

How do I take the carbon out of my Fluval u filter so I can add the treatment...?

I do not know which part is carbon?

Very worried.

On my two Fluval U4s, the carbon is on the two outer pads that are black on one side.

However, unless you have added fresh carbon pads within ~7 days of starting Ich treatment, you can safely ignore the "remove activated carbon" warning on the meds. After ~7 days, the adsorbing properties that could take meds of of the tank water are gone, they then become just another filter media layer for bacteria to latch onto and removing them could send your tank into a mini-spike (albeit there should propertionally be a lot more bacteria inside the central blue biomax box).

Ok - I have removed the carbon pads after digging out the instructions for the filter and have them in tank water...however, I will replace them in the morning. Thank you Nobodyofthe Goat for helping so quickly

I thought everything was going a bit too well!!
I am absolutely on teterhooks - a mild case of white spot on the platy's but I have cory's so have dosed half the dosage of British King White Spot treatment (malachite green).

I will never sleep tonight - I may go down in the morning and have lots of dead fish.

No need to replace the carbon. Just leave them out until you finish the treatment since you have already removed them. It won't hurt anything and less messing with the filter is probably better with a newly cycled tank.

Ich happens to plenty of hobbyists so don't feel bad. The best advice that I could give is follow the instructions on the medication exactly. Don't stop treating until 4 days after you see the last spot. It can still be in their gills if you stop treatment too soon and you'll be dealing with it all over again. Hope all goes well.

From research i think you need to increase the temp if your tank to speed up the metabolism if the parasite thus it releases from the fish & spawns .... It is in the spawning phase of the parasite that you kill it with ich treatment. Have a Google of whitespot and/or read it on this site.
Fingers crossed you caught in time though in all honesty, your fish have to be pretty plagued by it not to recover, assuming your water stats are ok.
What are your water stats as this may be why they have contracted the white spot as its common when fish are stressed.
Hope all goes ok Em!!

Thanks everyone - you are making me calm down at least!

Water stats are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 10-20 Nitrate.
All tested this morning - no signs of Ich then. I put Aquarium light on this evening and Bam! Four Platy's with 1 spot each on their tails...including a small fry with a spot.

I have increased temp to 29-30 degrees. The cory's do not look impressed.

Add plenty of water surface movement, even if that means lowering the water level so the filter output is level or even above the waterline, warmer water has a lower oxygen potential.

Getting out of bed to do that NOW - thank you Nobody. Will report in the morning

Cories always hate a heat increase for me, but they will bounce back. They could have come to your tank with ich, or the stress of the move contributed. I would know all about buying sick fish :/ Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you Fishfanatic - and thanks for replying on my other thread - I panicked!

This morning all fish are as happy as ever - I suppose corys are a little slower. The platies are fine and the gouramis are always a bit slow so I guess all is well for now. I have removed one platy to a hospital tank because his eye is popping slightly and he was being very aggressive to the other fish..not sure what that is about. Ratio is 3 males to 7 females platy in the tank.
He seems fine in the hospital tank though - eye is not fungal - just a little larger??

Thank you ALL
