Hi folks.

I've got a new 48 gallon tank that I will be setting up in a few weeks. I am transferring what remains of my under stocked 25 gallon tank. They are as follows:-

3 gold tetra
2 platy
2 bristlenose pleco (the small ones!)
2 genuine siamese algae eaters
7 zebra loach

I am really keen on finding some larger fish to mix with the smaller communtity ones (which I intend to get a few more of), and I have spent several hours researching compatability. I just cannot seem to find anything that won't eat or be bothered by my other fish or that won't take over or out grow my new tank. Any suggestions please?

TIA.

3 gold tetra - These would prefer a group of 6+.
2 platy - Depending on gender they could have young!
2 bristlenose pleco (the small ones!) - Cool.
2 genuine siamese algae eaters - I heard these get nasty.
7 zebra loach - Cool.

What types of non-compatible fish have you been looking at? We could probably find you some similar replacements.

Not sure, but you might be thinking of Chinese Algae Eaters (CAE), not SAE. However, they are easily confused since they are so commonly mis-labeled at stores. I just went to a lfs today that said they have SAEs in stock. I printed out this article before going, http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Algae-Eaters/ and informed them that they are carrying CAE, not SAE.

Anyway, not sure what to tell you on a bigger fish that is compatable. Do not get blue or gold gourami like I tried, they killed some of my platy. I heard that pearl gourami are almost as hardy and not as aggressive though. However, they are not a large fish really, getting to maybe 4 inches. (10cm)

Another 4 inch fish that mihgt be friendlier than the pearl gourami is the giant danio - http://www.fishforums.net/content/Cyprinid...96/Giant-Danio/

for that size tank a 15-20 cm centerpiece fish might be nice, however, as you discovered, it is hard to find a friendly variety that size. Many people put Angel fish in that size tank. I know they are supposed to be bad with neon tetra, but they might be OK with your fish. If interested I would post about it in the cichlid forums, I think they are south american.

Hi.

To Luketendo

I know the tetra would prefer to be in a bigger shoal, and a few weeks ago they were but that's another story. I shall probably add three more when I start the new tank up. The SAE are very friendly and they never seem to bother anyone else. I haven't specifically looked at any type of fish as I just don't know where to start. Every time I see or read about a fish I like the look of it turns out to be a nightmare to keep, or very aggressive or some other problem.

Nice. I particularly like the Bolivian Ram & rainbox fish

Yeah the Danios look nice too. I had considered an Angel but read they can be agressive to smaller fish.
