Ok, my online order now arrived. In the meantime, Maracide, Aquarisol and Maracyn seemed to solve both the Ick and the fungus (it was white fluffy on only one fish). They are all doing better.

Tested water before water change:
Ammonia: barely above 0.
Nitrite: guessing on the color chart ... looks like .1 tops
Ph (confusing -- there is a regular and a high end and both come to 7.6).

Stupid "complete" test kit lacks a nitrate test.

But these all seem pretty good for what is a recently cycled tank or maybe just finishing the cycle.

Don't know what caused the problems, but I then changed water (25-30%), put the filter back in and installed the heater.

For some reason the dealer gave me a 100W heater. I think b/c it is only like 50 cents more expensive than the 50W. But I have only a 6Gal tank. Is there any danger here??? Or is it just important to have a big enough heater. Seems to work pretty quickly, as I guess it should as it is twice as strong a unit as I need in there according to all I've read.

Anyway, to sum up the fishies seem on the mend, and this is good as I leave town in less than a week for about 12 days.

Hope my bonehead friend can figure out how to put the food in the tank (I'll measure for him).

Cheers all. And to those of you who were helpful earlier, thanks much. 8) :D

Heater will be fine and tests sound ok......glad you got it sorted m8 :D

Hi. Retested the Nitrite after the water change (about 8 hrs after) and now it tests arou 0.2

Any reason I should be concerned -- it is now a month-old tank? Anything I can/should do?

No, thats fine m8 :)
Just keep doing those regular water changes every two weeks or so, with about 20% of the water, and add dechloinatior.

This should keep your fish happy

Well, came back from that 12 day trip to find that the fish that had recovered was an ex-fish, and not recently so

So far gone no idea what the cause was. The others are happy and seemingly healthy, water is clear, even the new plant grew. :hmm:

So I need a new male platy after I change water, etc.

Still, 5 out of 6 surviving is not so bad I spose...
