undergravel filter

Just wondering...can you have an undergravel filter in a tank and still have live plants w/o the root systems being destroyed?

Yes.

For 20 years, all that I had available to me were ugf's and I grew plants. Crypts, Swords, Vallis etc. It is very true to say that plants grow better without ugf's, and that ugf's work better without plants, so the setup is far from ideal, but it can work.

you can also try plants like Anacharis that don't have roots that need to be put under the gravel, also floating plants and even some Moss or Riccia

yes I don't know why but this plant can be left floating without any problems and it won't develop roots or you can plant it and it will eventually have little roots but not too long, at least thats what I've experienced and read since I have them both planted and floating
