Today we travelled down to Dundee to visit house of pices, dobbies, then decided to go to Coupar and have a look at ultimate aquatics.

Right from the minute i walked in i was impressed, the whole store is so clean and bright and they have the biggest selection of marine fish i have seen up here in Scotland.

The tropicals are well labeled and i noticed lots of information and advice on various tanks too.We were left along for a while to browse and then we were asked if we needed any help, when we did need assistance it was easy to track someone down and he came and saw to us right away even though he was busy doing something else at the time.

I bought 4 red zebra cichlids and i was asked what i would consider to be all the right questions without feeling like my intellegence was being insulted,it was made very clear that these guys care for the fish and not just a sale.

I was also very impressed with the way my fish were bagged, each one in a seperate back which was filled with air and the corners of the bags taped to prevent any leaks.

The assistant was even more than happy to give us advice on lighting.

We got home not too long ago and the zebras are currently being aclimatised and look really happy.

Absolutely delighted with the service, only down side is it being so far away from Aberdeen but i will deffinately be visiting again.

Shame i can't say the same for dundee pets@home,never had problems with them before but today one of the fish i bought died within 30 minutes or so of purchase and they tried to fob me off with all sorts of lame excuses, the poor thing was stressed out due to the young assistant who had no idea what he was doing, taking 30 minutes to catch 3 fish,i did eventually get a refund and also told them that they should make sure any staff being left along in the fish dept should atleast be trained, before we got served i watched him sell some fairly large silver dollard without asking the customer any questions whatsoever (this was after the customer had asked what they were).

House of pisces used to be my LFS till 6 weeks ago when i moved back to wales from Dundee, they are fab in there the owner Stewart is a very nice man and a lot of his family work there and nothing is too much trouble for them, they do get very busy and sometimes its a littlemore than obvious that they may be under staffed, but all the same i have never had bad advice or a bad fish from them :).. probably best to avoid busy times such as saturday afternoon :)

Yea Sheila i love house of pisces and have always had good advice and good stock from them, they had 3 axeloti in today,i was sooo excited as thats the first time i have seen them up close. :fish:

he has his website up and running now.. only took him 3 yrs

if you look on yell.com the address will come up.. i still havent seen it but i did see signs all over the shop saying that he had finally finished it.. typical stewart  and next tme u go.. a red bounty and a can of diet coke will get you a hefty discount ;) (honest)

i have a question about ultimate aquatics in Cupar (no o in it ;))

are they near the garden centre? and along with the garden centre, are they the only 2 shops in cupar?

just trying to figure if i've shopped there. have been to the garden centre and one other, so if there's only 2 shops, then been to it, lol!!
do remember quite a lot of marine fish, but not it being clean, but that was over 2 years ago...

they did have 2 types of tetras, that i've been trying to find the name of ever since, and they're the only place that had them!

they had quite a bit of different fish, compared to the usual pets at home and dobbies. might have to take another trip thru there.

as for house of pisces, my dad knows stewart. he took our 12" plec off of us years ago!! now we're back into the fish keeping, we keep saying we need to get through there and have a look see. might get on to my dad and pop through, we have a tank needing filled up, lol.

Yeah they're both on the same industrial estate, the garden centre is the next entrance along the main road iirc.

yeah, same one we were at then.

we bought quite a few fish from there, for 3 different tanks, still got a few fish left from there. 6 tetras we bought from there died the day after, they had a white fungus around their mouths, can't remember what it's called.

only place we'd found that had lovely julii cats!

White stuff round the mouth is not fungus, it's columnaris which is bacterial, a rather nasty thing to say the least.
That sounds like A GOOD LFS. AKA a serious rarity. Me jealous. (My LFS is great, but it's a small-country-town kinda thing - hard to track down rare stock.)

Ultimate Aquatics fife. Very disapointed with their online ordering service. I bought tail ends for my vectron uv steriliser that still have not arrived after 8 weeks. I have phoned about a dozen times and had a different excuse every time, i have been told they have sent out 3 units (i never received any). told they cant get out because of the snow, then told their order has not arrived, then got the wrong order, then i was told they have not had them in for over 2 months. If i was told that at the start i would have ordered them elsewhere. My tank has now got a horrible algae bloom and the best they could do after 8 weeks is to offer me a refund! all i want is 2 cheap tail ends to get my uv steriliser back in action to get my tank cleaned up! Don't use ultimate discount aquatics cupar fife unless you really need to, i would not recommend them to anyone.
