Found some of these at a Maidenhead Aquatics store in Morden, South London. 3 for a tenner so not bad. They have the stripe going into the tail and seem to be the genuine article....after a day have started nibbling..... :D

Just in case anyone else was on the lookout!!

DOES THE FLTING FOX HAVE A LOT OF RED AT THE FRONT N BLACK N WHITE NEAR THE TAIL???

Hey Jumpman,

I have discovered Maidenhead Aquatics @ Morden a few months ago having searched for ages for a decent LFS. I have found them to be really informative, always happy for you to call them up if you have any questions and their stock is ace! I am like a kid in a sweet shop in that place!

Theres a few very similar looking species and to be honest I'd check what MA list their fish as.... I was missold the very same species by them last year and then they denied ever stocking the fish I'd purchased :grr:

Check this artical m8

SAE's

:)

well whats this fish that ive seen then?????

was the same shape as that flying fox but it was bright red at the front and black n white stripes at the back

Jumpman/Platypus,

I use MA at Morden as well - love the stock of fish there. However I have to agree with WWW that it can be very deceptive.

I got a couple of what I thought were SAEs there a while back (and I knew what to look for, or so I thought). However it is looking much more like they were CAEs as the stripe doesn't go all the way through to the tail like it should.

I really don't think it was any sort of deception on their part in my case, just that they can be really difficult to tell apart whilst they are still quite small.

Good luck with yours Jumpman.

Cheers, Eddie

Hi - I'm getting some true SAEs from Tri-Mar in Cornwall, online. I trust them as the guy was double checking my current fish is a true SAE and he knew his stuff but it does serve to be paranoid.

SAEs are gold, black and white (no red, although apparently males can get a red spot on them when in breeding form). They also have two little barbels at the corner of their mouth - not a suckermouth like a CAE, and their nostrils stick up a bit. The black body stripe has a slightly blurry edge and goes right on to the tail, where it ends in a point.

I find my SAE a great little fish and he's busily working on clearing his new home (a molly tank that is covered in green algae). He's quite an acrobat and swims at the most bizarre angles when trying to eat algae off the giant vallis. He hasn't bothered the guppies or mollies for one second. I do think he'd be happier in a little school, however, which is why I'm getting some more.

The fish you describe sound more like False SAEs. However, provided you aren't trying to add them to a school of SAEs I think they sound like great fish anyway - in my experience, SAEs may nibble brush algae, but they don't eat it in quantities large enough to make much of a difference, particularly if live food etc. is also available. My SAE will take a brine shrimp over brush algae any day! However, it is nice to know what actual species you are buying - I've made mistakes like that with rummy-nosed tetras and I know how annoying it can be.

AlienAnna,

I was chatting with Monty down at Tri-Mar earlier today! Put in an order for some fish for various tanks. Looking forward to next Wednesday whne they will be here.

I am going to arrange a trip down to Cornwall for myself one of these days just to go and have a look at the shop, it sounds wonderful. The only down side is that I will probably spend loads of money there :)

Cheers, Eddie
