I just purchased a new 55 gallon aquarium at the pet store near my parents place in Pennsylvania, because it was cheaper. I need to carry it 90 miles back home. Currently it is on the back seat of my car with the seatbelts wrapped around it so it won't fall off the seat. I'm wondering if I should do anything else to protect it on the drive, to prevent it from forming leaks. Most of the weight is on the ends because the back seat isn't flat. The tank is empty, aside from the hood, which is sitting on the bottom. I'm not sure how much stress it is designed to handle. Does anyone have an idea of how much stress it can handle, and what I should do to protect it?

Car seats are excellent for transporting tanks. Make sure there are no seat belt buckles or other hard objects underneath. You may want to wrap a rag or some other padding around the seat belt buckles holding the tank. You don't want them banging the glass if they loosen a little.

i find it best to wrap the tank in an old blanket and then belt it in as you have done and no issues at all....
you`ve done it the right way

Thanks for the tips.

I have a blanket under it to protect it from the buckles, and some pillow beind it to keep it from bouncing around. I think it will survive the trip.

I suppose it would also be a good idea to take the hood out so that it isn't sliding around on the bottom and banging against the sides.

You was at the store whilst posting? How was you doing that?

I'm at my parent's summer house in PA. It's the 90 mile drive home to NY that I'm concerned about, not the drive home from the pet store.

yea take the lid out as it will probably scratch the inside of the tank, the lid s the easy part to transport
