Hi , have recently purchased 9 torpedo barb. but to day i have noticed that they are often right at the surface doing what looks like gasping for air. all other fish in tank seem fine though. tank is oxygenated.. is this something to worry about? or common for torpedos to do ? thank you

thank you

I have Two Torpedo barbs, and have never seen mine behave like that, Is the tank over stocked maybe??

Brads

what fish do you have nd what is the tank size?

check the water parameters in the tank, if everything is fine increase the oxygen in the tank by either adding an air pump or moving the filter above the water level.

gasping usually means one of two things, not enough oxygen or ammonia is present in the water. either way its generally not good

Exactly what I would have said.

My torpedo's don't do that at all. None of my fish do.
But just like what has already been said, it may very well be your oxygen levels are too low. But keep an eye on all the fish. Gasping can also be a more sinister sign!

Are you going to post a picture of your's? Nine torpedo's must look great.

Also could be some kind of chemical that got in the water, like air freshener.

Thanks all for help, tank is 400 litres with silver sharks silver dollars and parrot fish. i have turned up air pump flow and this seems to have helped.. I have run out of ammonia tests however have tested nitrite and nitrate and this is 0 .. does that mean it cant be ammonia problem ?
thank you

It could still be an ammonia problem and it just hasnt got to the point where nitrites are showing up yet. Its very stange for nitrates to read as zero though unless it is a very heavily planted tank so I would double check the test kits are ok.

Have they done it ever since you put them in or only recently?

well i havent noticed it before but they have only been in a couple of weeks so it could be my unobservance but doesnt seem normal to me, i just cant understand why its only them doing it. and yes tank is pretty well planted .
