Tomorrow we are attempting to move a Rio 240 to a friends house. It is going in the back of my boyfriends car lined with a duvet. Does anyone have any tips to avoid breaking it?
There will only be the two of us until we get to the other end!

empty half the water or else the glass will shatter under the pressure

i'd empty all the water!
i recently moved a 55gal with maybe 3" of water in the bottom and it was splashing all over the roof of my buddies Danali

The tank will be totally empty whilst its in transit. Its stressful trying to work out how to transport fish etc aswell!

Hi

I've moved around 30 or so over the years so i maybe able to help.

Save as much water as possible, i used to buy the cheap flip top bins from wilkos and bag the water up, made it much easier to move around. (more than a 1/5th of the total water i used to aim for)

After you have saved the good water (remember not to siphon it out from the substrate etc). bag your fishes up if you have any (good thick cardboard box will do, either line it with polystrene or make sure the fishes are surrounded by bags with just water in to act as cushions its good idea to make these a little warmer too will help keep the fish warm)

empty the rest of the tank, make sure you lay the tank on its base in the car, a duvet is fine (just back sure theres nothing under it, even a screw could crack the base with the right road bump), make sure you add some padding incase of heavy right foot or a heavy left, so the tank cant fly forward or backwards (i used duct tape 4 huge pieces of polystrene to mine, cushions work just aswell as long as they are thick)

Remember dont rush, you have a good 12hrs before you need even worry about your fish, even then.. just rip open the water bagged up in the flip bins, add your heater and your filter.. its a ready made fish tank.

Hope that helps.

Paul

I appreciate your suggestions as we are moving from one apt. downstairs (dozen stairs--no elevator) to another. We have one 10 gallon tank filled with 2 balloon mollies, 1 silver molly, 1 catfish, 2 cherry barbs and 1 rosy barb. I guess it's still best to empty and save water and put the fish in separate containers....

We also have a 3 gallon tank with a beautiful betta--I'm tempted to take 1/2 of water out and carry him downstairs in the tank...

Any input would be appreciate.
Thanks.
