Hi. I have two large tiger oscars in a 70gal tank. Over the past few months, I have noticed a buildup of some small crustaceans on the tank sides. They range from barely visible to about 3mm across, are immobile, have a chitinous transparent shell, and have visible internal organs. They appear scale-like, but are smooth and round shaped. They appear to collect more toward the top of the tank near the waterline as well. They are not attaching themselves to the fish, so I am not that concerned, but what the heck are these things? They are kind of a pest to clean up. Any clues?

Are u sure they arent a snail of some sort ? possiblt a ramshorn?

Baby Snails I think. I have them in an upstairs tank, like you say, look unsightly but they shouldn't be a problem. They're probably abundant because Oscars, being messy feeders, leave a lot of waste and small food particles. The snails will lap this up. :)

:) Hi Chameleon, welcome to the forum.
Looks like you've got snails in your tank, not really a problem but as Gibbo says, oscars are mucky fish and the snails will multiply in these conditions. :( Mac.

The good thing is they won't actually do any damage they may just look a little unsightly :( Getting rid of them is really difficult unless you want to completely strip down your tank and bleach it all!! You can crush them as you see them but what they are doing is eating the waste food/fishwaste you could try to cut down on the feeding but like mac says oscars are messy and so its very unlikely you'll manage to starve the snails out of the tank :/
