So about 3 weeks ago I desided to toss some feeder guppies into my GSP tank so the puffer's could have a little sport and treat. Don't worry the guppies came from a home stock with no diseases. I don't make it a habit of this, maybe 3-4 times a year. This time I supplied 7 guppies to the tank. The Puffers chased them around for a couple hours, even teaming up to catch a couple. After they were done (I didn't see anymore guppies in the tank and the puffers went to relax on the substrate as they often do) I went about my house chores. The next day I noticed two guppies hanging around the top near the water surface. So I thought oh they missed a couple, the puffers will get them later. Well it's been 3 weeks and the 2 guppies are still alive and doing just fine and developing some nice color (well one is the other I think is a female). They stayed near the suface of the water for a few days at first, now they swim all about the tank. The puffers don't bother them at all, in fact during feeding time the guppies are right up there side by side with the puffers. I'm not much of a guppy fan and was unaware that they can live in brackish water (my sg. is at 1.018). So now I have a couple questions. First and for most can guppies live for an extended period of time in brackish water with no ill effects? Also, assuming the puffers don't eat the guppies, well they breed in brackish water if they are in fact male and female? I know there is no facted based answer for this one, but why would the puffers gobble up every guppy I've ever put in the tank and not these two? I find all of this quite odd.

Yes. They can be acclimated to seawater. Some people keep them in nano reef tanks.

Yes. Guppies breed freely in seawater.

Cheers, Neale

Well thats good to know. Although I'm not expecting a breeding factory to get out of hand, the puffers should keep things under control. I may just remove the guppies. I'm am quite curious as to how things will play though.
