I'm planning on getting a 30-35 gallon tank, which will be bare bottom with some guppies and platies, and likely also a female betta. I've been considering adding another species, and the dwarf gourami attracted me the most. However, will they be compatible and ok with my livebearers and tank setup (no substrate)?

Also, I am a little confused about number of males and females. I read up on the ideal proportion to keep, but since I'll likely have difficulty in getting females, which of the following options would be better:

1. put only one dwarf gourami
2. put 2-3 males

*also, assuming that I can find, for instance, that two males are ok and in the future I find one female, which would be better:

1. keep status quo
2. add female to two males (or would the boys be fighting over her?)

Err...Which second?

Sorry, I think my post was confusing. Here are my questions:

If I can find only boys, can I keep more than one?

And if there are already two boys, would adding 1 girl be ok, or are they better off just being two boys in the tank?

ok, well iv heard gouramis are agressive fish, so id go with either a male and female or 2 males. i wouldn't get 2 males and then a female. im almost positive they will fight over her :D

Personally, i wouldn't buy any dwarf gourami.

Due to inter-breeding, many fish are now carrying diseases such as TB.

If you were going to get some gourami i'd go for something like Honey Gourami

:)
