Hey,

are there any freshwater inverts or Fish that eat fish poo?
My angels have turned into little turd machines and its making my tank look really messy.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Hi Voycey :)

That's what a siphon is for. Do you know how to use one?

Yep and have been doing it twice a week for 2 months and its getting a bit tiresome, you wouldnt believe how much they are producing, I have some MTS but until they start reproducing more its gonna take a while.

I was wondering if there are any other inverts that can help do the job!

To the best of my knowledge there aren't any fish that eat poo and are also suitable for a tank. Someone named one the other day o another thread but it was a REALLY big fish that won't fit in any aquarium.

I know there arent many fish that eat fish poo however there are a few inverts - just whether they are freshwater is the problem?

I'm not even aware of any inverts. Ghost shrimp will eat leftover food but not poo.

Tilapia (aka Nile Perch), and they grow to around 15.5" and possibly more. More info.

Hi Voycey :)

Is the intake tube to your filter long enough? If it ends in the middle of the tank, it might not be picking up all the wastes it should be. You might be able to get an extension for it to improve its performance. :D

Its a fluval 3+ internal filter - also have a air powered sponge filter to pick up smaller bits.

The poo is too weighty to be sucked up im guessing - its being prepared for discus so doenst have much flow rate.;

If your fish are truly creating too much mess and you're siphoning as much as you say you are, I can guess you're either

- Overfeeding

or

- Using white or light coloured small grained substrate

or

- Have many high waste producing fish

These options leave you with a few possibilities. I haven't seen what fish you have, or what tank dimensions you have, but if it really is that bad and you do siphon as often as you say you do, then perhaps change over to large gravel if possible? Or, upgrade to a larger filter, perhaps external?

your right I am using Sand, an external filter is something i am considering however id want it to do both tanks and not sure if I want to invest in a UV steralisation unit.

I prefer sand due to the setup of the tank - its a totally natural tank and im trying to get enough MTS to clear the bottom :)

As for overfeeding I dont think I am - its possbile with the plecs and loaches because im never sure how much they are eating as they are never out. my plec is quite large and seems to eat the plec wafers quite quickly not really leaving much for the loaches.
