So, i've learned my tank is well and truly overstocked. I like having the massive variety personally, but I never thought about how much space and numbers of their own species each fish needed. I currently have all these fish in a 65L tank, 17 US gallons. I also may want to sell it as I don't like it for the fish, the filter is so strong, I see fish struggling to fight against it. And the filter doesn't suck up waste in some places, barely any.

People are saying I can have one inch of fish per US gallon, minus two for substrate and decor. That's 12 small fish. I don't think thats enough to bring this tall tank to life :) So I think i'm just going to give up my tank along with the fish. I think it may be for the best, as I will be going to uni in another 3 years.  I have a 5 Gallon ( 20L) tank out in the shed, maybe I could put some fish in that? I don't know what i'd want in there, as it would be very hard to maintain and need all these test kits, I can buy 4 for over $60 here >.<. We do have fish out in our pond, mosquito-eaters I believe. I might just have a tank of those or a small guppy tank? Let me know on thoughts :)

:(

At least you have the heart for those fishes...

I am not an expert at stocking myself and I hope someone will give you a list of options for your 5 Gal..

All the best!

The red-tailed shark and the 3-spot gourami should be rehomed. They could grow quite sizeable. The rest of your x1 and x2 fishes should at least be in groups of 6 as single schooling fish tend to become nippy and bullies if not kept in a group

Ashley, if you really enjoy fish keeping I don't think you should give up your tank.  Although the stocking list needs some work I am sure that most if not all fish keepers found themselves in a similar or worse situation than you are in now.  At least you have recognized the issues and want to do what is best for your fish.    I agree that the red tail and the gourami probably need to be rehomed to larger tanks.  I do not know about the requirements of all of your fish but do know some of them.  Tiger barbs can be very nippy/aggressive fish in groups of less than 6.  Even in a large group they can still be tough to find mates for.  Tetras also need to be in groups of at least 6.  I've always heard the bigger the school the better.  If I remember right, zebra danios actually require a cooler temperature than most tropical fish and also need to be in groups of at least 6.  Cory cats are bottom dwellers and need to be in a school of at least 4, but most people generally say at least 6 is better. I think you will find that the fish that require larger schools will brighten up and hide less when they are actually in the appropriate school size.  I once had 10 neons in my 55 gallon and the school was very fun to watch.   If you want lots of activity you could drop the tetras all together and go for a small school of barbs.  They will constantly chase each other around the tank and are beautiful fish IMO.  I guess what I am saying is don't give up unless you are not enjoying it.  If you do enjoy it, pick a few fish out of your current stock and let the forum members help you make the best list for your tank.

Tongue this is me saying im rehousing all of them -.-

I really do enjoy fishkeeping. It's very fun and entertaining to watch all the fish swim around. Im hoping to rehome them tomorrow if this pet shop pulls through. Thanks so much for the imput.
