Im in the process of cycling a 2ft, 55L tank which i want to stock with a largish school of neon tetras. Im also planing on rehoming my bristle nose into this tank.

Now according to my caluclations that doesnt leave me much room for anything else, I would also like a school of upper level swimming fish, preferably a tetra and ive heard that neons shouldnt be added to a tank until it is mature, so this fish needs to be quite hardy.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what type of would live happly and peacefully in such a community and the best ratio of neons to upper level fish that would best suit the tank.

Thanks

If u want a tera that is hardy then X-Ray Tetra are by far the best i have come across. When I 1st started keeping fish i was told to do a cycle with fish, and I used these without any losses. They look quite good aswell under good conditions and are quite small. Not sure whether u would class them as a top level fish tho, but certainly middle to upper.

as you're wanting neons
how about black neons; they are top swimmers and compliment neons nicely also quite hardy but not "bullet proof"

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!! B)

Ive never seen a X-ray tetra before, which could make it very hard to buy one. I did a google search and they look to be quite pretty peaceful fish. I will need to keep my eyes open between now and when im ready to add fish.

Black widow tetra, great fish, looks great in schools not sure about a top dweller but very hardy.

Hi Sam! My first fish ever was a black widow, so i know how hardy they are, though we never kept them in a sizeable school (how naive we were then), im not sure they are quite what im looking for though.

Zebra danios are hardy little buggers and usually stay middle to top dwelling

Im trying to make a quiet peaceful tank, but somehow i dont think zebra danios are going to follow the rules :p i love zebras, theyre so fun to watch, but im not sure the neons will appreciate them as tank mates.

At this point black neons are the go, but again, trying to get them from my LFS could be difficult. they dont seem to stock much of the slightly unusual, i will probably have to go further abroad.

thanks again, if anyone has any more suggestion they would be greatly appreciated

HI,

How about some ember tetras? They only grow to 0.8 inches and so you could have a much larger shoal. Mine range in colour from a deep red to a lovely gold. They get on great with my bigger tetras too.

As for where they like best to shoal, well mine seem to enjoy the middle to the top. The only trouble is they can be hard to obtain from lfs as they are not a common tetra but they are well worth the hunt.
