I aim to empty my 190 litre juwel trigon so I can change the gravel for sand and also add a 3d background. I am thinking that I should put the existing fish in a large 3ft container with the filter and heater and existing water. The make over should take about three days. Does this sound feasible and would the fish be ok?

Sounds fine. If you've got an external filter, bear in kind that many of them need the canister to be below the "tank" to work, but other than that it'll be fine.
