I just cleand my filter, because i change my filters in the middle of every month, and do gravel changes at the end of every month, i kinda messed up on timing but oh well.

To the point, do you guys like doing tank maintanance? It breaks my back, and i spend atleast an hour to make sure everything is juuuuust perfect and that i do a good job, once im done i look it it, nice i think to myself, i then go upstars and come back after an hour to see the tank cleaner, because the filter would have picked up all that garbage it let back in when it was turned off.

I love it do you?

However to a more serious question, i do gravel changes every month, water changes once a week, and filter media or whatever changes every month, or during the 2nd water change of each month.

However heres my problem, Ive just enlisted in the Army Reserve, ill be going away for 2 months during the summer, all the other times im away from home will be no longer then a week tops so its fine. The thing thats bothering me is i cant find anyone who will care for my fishes. Feeding is not a problem i get my mom to do that, however the main problem is maintanance, no one knows how to do it, water changes maybe, there simple enough, but vacumming gravel, filter changes, etc i dont know. I kind of dont trust them, infact i dont trust anyone around my tank, im 100% sure they'll mess up something and i dont wanna leave the burden of cleaning it on them anyway since they do so much already.

Im kind of stuck in a bind here, anyone have any suggestions of what can be done?

If you didn't vacuum or change the filter for 2 months, it wouldn't be a disaster. My 10-gallon went for almost a year without any filter changes or vaccuuming and water changes like every 3 months, and it was fine. That was when I was a beginner :3 2 months with no water change would be better than someone trying it and screwing up. I wouldn't worry too much.

Believe me, if my husband, son & job would give me 2 months off, I'd come and do it for free - always wanted to visit Canada :D

I wouldn't worry about the filter changes. That should be fine in the situation that you're in. My biggest worry would be someone overfeeding my fish.

Could you teach your mom how to gravel the tank? Maybe have her do it once a month while you're gone?

Out of curiosity, how do you change the water if you don't gravel vac?

I do gravel vac, its just i tend to pull out all the decorations and grave under it, its kind of a pain to put them back in the place they were, especially since my fishies and snail more so like to get stuck between the glass and rocks. So thats where the trouble comes i guess.
