every time i go through my weekly water change and vac the sand after a couple of days it seems to be covered in mulm again :( and i dont like the look of it, i also seem to get algae on the tank glass but it comes off easy thats a good thing! had a couple of stubborn algae stains to deal with but i have my filter on the lowest power setting because the fish i keep do not like flowing strong water the only thign i can think of is to put a sturdy thick plant cover infront of the filter outlet and increase the flow a bit hoping the plants will hold off most of the stronger current

any ideas ? :)

When my tanks have gotten too dirty too fast it's almost always been a case of overfeeding.

+1
try cutting back on the food, & for your algae problem, cut down the hours you have the lights on
I have sand in a couple of my tanks & although it looks messy sometimes, the poo is easy to syphon off, though you may have to do it more often if you can't stand looking at the dirt.
You could also try positioning your filter differently to suck up more of it

thanks for the replys, i was thinking maybe i should cut back on feeding a bit, and the same for the lights because i dont have a timer switch sometimes they get left on longer than i intended to keep them on, say if im not at home or something. thankyou for the help

You may have fish that like to poo a lot as well

what fish have you got and what filter, what do the fish do when its on full. Your filters flow is not keeping the debris suspended in the water column long enough to get sucked up. I had the same problem, added a second filter and the tank went spotless.

I have a 25 litre nano tank with a external filter for a 300 litre tank, 32x turnover and have chili rasboras who apperntly dont like stron flow but they seam happy enough, always out swimming about.

By bigger tank has two big filters on and again even big bodied fish have no problems.

a betta and 9 T.espei as far as i know neither of those like any water flow. i dont know alot about water turnover, so i cant work out what mine is at the minute :( i turned the flow up a bit but i didnt like it because it seemed as though the fish were struggling against the current so i put it back on the lowest setting
