Fish Aficionado
Since there is nothing pinned here, I decided to write some opinions and facts down for all you newbies.
1) Don't buy fish from Walmart
They're good for equipment, but they have no expertise on fish and their fish
have all kinds of diseases
2) Do research b/f buying
You'll kill less fish and will set the tank up better
3)Make sure there is a guarantee on fish
If the fish die, you'll get compenstaion and you know that the store takes care
of it's fish (doesn't that seem somewhat paradoxical?)
4)Don't put in fish that are aggressive towards other fish
Reduce stress and death
5)Plants
Not necessary, but aesthically pleasing
They don't really affect oxygen levels b/c most of the O2 comes from the
surface, but they help keep nutirents down, which helps keep algae down
Place the bigger plants in back and smaller ones in the front or side to allow
you to see the fish better
Wash plants b/f placing in tank and remove snails and snail eggs
6)Ask questions
Don't be afraid to ask, we neither bark nor bite (though we might slobber
)
7)Wash equipment before using
Place equipment in boiling water to remove bacteria and scum
Don't place glass (thermometers, they leak when heated too much, I would
know
) or electrical appliances in boiling water
Sterilize nets and siphons after each use and before using them in separate
tanks
8)Wash gravel vigorously!
Wash gravel for at least 10 minutes b/f using to eliminate harmful paint
residues
9)Slope gravel back
The back of the tank should have the most gravel for the bigger plants' roots
and so the food rolls forward so yo can clean it more easily
10)Don't crowd
Don't place too many fish in at once
Don't place too many ornaments and plants in the middle of the tank, this
allows for more room for the fish to swim in
That's enough for now. I don't want to put effort into this if the moderators decide to delete this...
(by the way, I feel like a moderator when I make this. I'd love having this pinned here...)
