So I've stirred up some waste and food in my tank... will it eventually settle or will it just float like that?

It will settle, some will be caught by the filter as well.

unless you have a sand substrate (sand storm lol)

I've got sand in my new tank and its turned the water yellow. I've done a 60% water change and that has improved things a lot. Anything else I can do to make the water shinny and clear?

Did you wash the sand repeatedly before putting it into the tank? It's usually the only way to make sure the water doesn't get cloudy.

P.T.

Always wash the sand beforehand and then let the filter do its work,a day or two and all should be clear. :)

stupid me I didn't wash the sand, I washed the gravel loads but didn't think about washing the sand :(

There are a lot of particles in the water but its more that the actual water is a yellowly colour. The sand I used was Aquarium Silver sand. Hopefully the colour will gradually start becoming clear soon.

If you rinse well enough your water won't become cloudy at all. Youe water is silty at the moment. Which basically means it's muddy. It'll clear up. Doing water changes at this point is a good idea. Be careful not to drastically change PH or temperature if you've already got fish in the tank.

If its live sand NEVER WASH IT, because you would kill the live sand (and waste your money) Why do a water change just wait 2 days boom its gone

I just recently set up a tank with sand and we didn't wash the sand, but put a little bit of water in the bottom first, then the sand.. let it settle for a couple hours and then put a dinner plate right side up on top of the sand and poured the rest of the water over that (so the current doesn't kick up the sand or make a hole in it). The water was quite cloudy for awhile and we didn't turn the filter on until bed time because I didn't know if a bunch of sandy stuff going in there would be bad for it.. but it was crystal clear by morning :) So it should clear up if you just let your filter do its thing :)
