Hi, a week or so ago my fish all died from a faulty Juwel Heater and I have decided to give fish keeping another go (without using Juwel parts)!

I cleared all the water (was smelly) and the tank has been left 'empty' for some while now.

So I'm about to undertake cleaning the tank (to hopefully get it looking like new!) and will then start the process of building bacteria up again.

Does anyone have any ideas of how best to clean the tank? It currently has a few green Alge areas all over the front and back of the glass. In an ideal world, the glass will look brand new!

I'll be hacking at the Silicone later with a scraper (eek)!

Click the picture below to aid any suggestions to how to clean the inside of the tank..

er.. just get an algae scraper some fish friendly cleaning agent and get some good ole fashion elbow grease in there - i have heard white vinegar can be used for cleaning.

The fish friendly cleaning agent is where I get lost. I assume Vinegar will be OK after I rinse with dechlorinated water & test for ph [and add alkaline if required) - but is there something that would be more effective? :)

some pple acually use tooth past for ther glass gives it more of a shine and helps reduce scratch marks just wash it after

Neat white vinegar will kill bacteria and deodorise the tank, scour with a soft green plastic sponge scourer. Don't use a cheap one though as it may release green dye.Or you could use one of those funny nylon net things you get to use in the bath instead of a sponge. Not sure what they are called.
Then simply rinse. Vinegar is cheap, effective, non toxic and rinses away well.

bleach 1 part beach 50 parts water
also you dont have to use dechlorinated water to clean it
when you done with the cleaning take it to the garden and hose it out to ensure all traces of chemicals are gone :good:

Thank you very much for the suggestions!

Bleech scares me somewhat, so I'm going to attempt the white vinegar suggestion first of all and if that fails - I will go ahead with the 50/50 bleech to water combo.

Thank you once again, you've put my mind at rest.

P.s. fenwoman - by funny nylon bath thing, do you mean a "bath puff"? :) (below) hehe
